This term Year 1 have been learning all about castles. We have explored how kings and Queens lived long ago and how this compares to our lifestyles now. Children could not imagine a time before iPads and mobile phones. We have looked at the different parts of a castle and what they were used for.
We have used colour wash techniques to create some stunning dragon silhouette paintings which are currently displayed outside our classrooms.
In literacy we have learned the story of George and the dragon and used Pie Corbett to retell this with our friends. Children have shared some fantastic home learning making their own shields and swords and some amazing junk model castles.
In numeracy we have been continuing to practise addition and subtraction with missing number problems. and used our knowledge of counting in 2s 5's and 10's to help solve multiplication problems.
With the phonics test on the horizon next term we have been practising our blending and segmenting of real and alien words. Children have worked really hard and we are getting year 2 ready!
During Spring 2 year 1 have had a fantastic time learning all about old and new toys. We started our topic with an exciting trip to Weston Park Museum where we explored all the different exhibits and pretended to be Museum Curators.
We have learned all about the inventor of Lego and produced some fantastic information booklets which we will be sharing in our finale. The children have also been inventive and working as a team to make some interesting Lego masterpieces. We have innovated Toy Story after watching the film and replaced them with our own characters, and have created some amazing pictures of our favourite characters.
In maths we have been learning about multiplication and division and counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s has helped us with this.
We have been scientists and tested out which would be the best material for a waterproof coat for a bear! Making predictions and testing out our ideas.
We have been using our bodies to balance seated and standing in PE and practising our ball skills and ran the daily mile with firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our topic 'What makes Great Britain great?'. We started by learning about our local area, and then we found out about the 4 countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. The children created beautiful portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, and have been really interested in the map work skills we have used in our Geography lessons. Our topic finale was a great success!
This term our topic has been Are you Afraid of the Dark? This began with an amazing visit from Guy Fawkes on our first day back at school who taught children all about the Gunpowder Plot. The children got to act out the story of the plot, and learn how to write secret messages once back at class. They used their learning to write Newspaper Reports and create Portraits of Guy Fawkes which can be seen in our class displays.
We then looked at the beautiful Story of the Owl who was afraid of the dark. Using Pi Corbett the children learned the story using actions which then helped them to retell this in literacy.
We have been busy mathematicians, learning to add and subtract, working with number bonds and are starting to learn how to tell the time.
Christmas is always a busy time of year in school and the children have worked extremely hard practising and learning songs for their performance. We have been writing to Santa explaining why Class 3 & 4 should be on the nice list and also looking at the story of the nativity.
Children have settled into year 1 so well and we are really proud of all their hard work this term. In autumn 1 we have been learning about ourselves, our bodies and using our senses.
We had a fantastic walk round Barkers Park where we went on a leaf hunt and collected lots of autumn treasures. Back in class we learned about deciduous and evergreen trees and labelled the different parts of trees. We have created some beautiful leaf rubbings and paintings and learned how to mix colours.
We have been busy mathematicians learning numbers to 100, 1 more 1 less than numbers adding and subtracting and number bonds.
In autumn 2 our topic is "Are you afraid of the dark? We have a very special visitor on our first day back to school to start our learning with a bang! We will looking at the history of Guy Fawkes and creating some firework poems and artwork. We will share the story The owl who was afraid of the dark and be preparing for Christmas with the nativity story and our Christmas performance.
Miss Jordan and Miss Warren are really excited to join their new classes as they head into Year 1. Miss Jordan is the Teacher in Class 3 and Mrs Kime is the Teaching Assistant. In class 4, Miss Warren is the Teacher and Ms Poskitt is the Teaching Assistant. During our transition we spent time getting to know each other and the children created some fabulous work which is displayed in the classrooms for you to see.
