Autumn Term

Autumn 2nd Half

This half-term our Learning Journey has been ‘Marvellous Medicine’ and is based around the nurses from history; Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell.

English
As part of our English work this half term, we have been writing letters in the role of a historical character. We have had to use lots of adjectives to describe how hospitals would have looked in the past. We have written instructions to explain how to make poppy badges linked to our work on Remembrance Day. You could help your child with their English skills by reading with them as often as possible and learning to read and spell the tricky words on pages 24-28 of their reading diary.

Maths
In Maths, we have been learning to add and subtract numbers. We have learnt how to add three numbers using a variety of strategies; finding bonds to 10, finding doubles or near doubles. We have thought about the best strategy to use when adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers; mental strategies, written methods and drawing pictures.  We are becoming more confident at our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. You could support your child further by chanting these at home e.g. 1 x 5 = 5, 2 x 5 = 10…

Science
We have been learning how to keep ourselves healthy. We enjoyed finding out how much food, water, rest and exercise a human needs to survive. We now know the difference between wants and needs.

Creative Curriculum

We have done lots of learning about Remembrance Day and enjoyed listening to the poem in Flanders Fields by John McCrae. We used the poem as inspiration to produce our own poppy pictures using a range of media.

This half term in Art, we have also been developing out drawing skills, focusing on shape and adding tone to show light and dark areas in portraits.

We have also enjoyed learning about how Christians celebrate Christmas by singing songs, creating dances and have retold the story of the First Christmas.

Autumn 1st Half

What a busy first term we have had in Year 2! It is wonderful to be back in the classroom after so much time off. Our learning has centered around the story of “The Jolly Postman” by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.

In our maths learning we have been building on the skill learned in Year 1, counting objects to 100 in words and representing these numbers in numerals.  The children have used a ranged of concrete materials to show how the number is made up e.g. 42 is 4 tens and 2 ones but also 3 tens and 12 ones. The children have compared a variety of objects using the vocabulary more than, less than and equal to, and the symbols <, >, =.  The children have been counting forwards and backwards in steps of 2, 5 and 10 from multiples of these numbers.

Our grammar has focused on learning different word classes e.g. nouns, verbs and adjectives. In phonics sessions we have been revisiting phase 5 graphemes. In English the children have written their own innovated fairy tale based on the story Jack and the beanstalk. The children have used adjectives and powerful verbs to make their writing interesting to the reader.

Our Science this half term has been around materials. The children have identified and compared the uses of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard. They have performed simple tests to compare how things move on different surfaces. As part of our Geography learning we have been on a walk around our local area and identified the human and physical features of our locality.
