Autumn Term

Autumn Term 1st Half

Year 4 have had a wonderful first half term filled with lots of fun and learning. Both classes have settled in beautifully and risen to the challenges and expectations of Year 4. We have been having a big push on handwriting and the presentation of our work.

In maths, we have consolidated our understanding of place value and moved on to looking at numbers up to 10,000! We have also been introduced to the addition and subtraction that we will be learning. Times tables has also had a big focus this half term which will continue throughout the year. Can your child remember any of our focus timestables?

We have enjoyed our Talk for Writing units. We have explored a warning story and thought about the features that add character information into our writing. The children worked hard on their first story. For our next unit, we had a special visitor in our classroom - A tree giant! He left lots of clues and messed everything up but it was an inspiring start to our unit. The children have explored the features of an information text including the structure, the language and the punctuation.

Our science unit has explored animals, including humans. We have learnt the names and functions of the different types of teeth, how the digestive system works, about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and explored the food chain.

In Geography, we have explored the importance of trade and transport while also looking at the advantages and disadvantages of these. Our key artist this half term was Charlotte Hannaford who uses coloured pencils to draw realistic animals. We explored shape, tint and textures before creating a final piece. In music, we have started learning the Ukulele. The children have listened carefully to the instructions and learning 3 new chords. We have worked with Mrs Broadhead in our P.E sessions to learn a rock and roll dance.

It has been a half term packed full of wonderful experiences and learning opportunities. We can't wait to see what the children will achieve in Autumn 2.
