Autumn Term

It has been a very exciting start to this year’s topic. The children were introduced to the story ‘Colly’s Barn’ and have been researching facts about the different birds which feature in the story.

The children enjoyed their first visit of the school year to Clumber Park and explored different habitats during the day. We have also been very lucky to have Mrs Kirkman in school once again to share her interests of British birds with us all.

The children made bird feeders and wrote a set of instructions on how to do this. Some children have taken these feeders home and made observations of the garden visitors who have come to feast on them.

In reading activities, the children have been developing their understanding of inference. They have enjoyed ‘reading pictures’ and drawing logical conclusions. Comprehensions will continue to be a regular feature of our reading sessions as children work on developing their answers and showing understanding of the texts that they read.

During maths sessions we have developed our understanding of place value and the children have learnt to order and compare and round numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000. The children have been introduced to TT Rockstars and had a very enjoyable launch day. All children have logins and can access this wonderful site at home.

The children have been developing their art skills and used a range of media including pencil, pastel and clay. We have made use of sketchbooks to experiment and develop our ideas.

In PE, the children have been improving their fitness with zumba activities and circuit training.  PE will continue to be on Mondays and Fridays.

The children have worked hard this half term. Miss Kingston and Miss Hipwell are looking forward to seeing how you progress over the year.

It has been an exciting Autumn 2 half term in Year 4. The children have continued learning about our 'Living In Harmony' topic, focusing on sound and how sound is made.

The children were introduced to orchestras this half term and they enjoyed researching the different sections at home and writing this up into a non-chronological report. They absorbed lots of interesting facts and were able to recite these in their work.

Adding to this, the children enjoyed a hands on lesson observing how sound is made from vibrations - this included splashing a tuning fork in water and beating a drum with rice on it! This was fascinating and children were able to understand how louder sounds are caused by bigger vibrations and quieter sounds by smaller vibrations.

During maths sessions we have developed our understanding of multiplication and division by using concrete and pictoral concepts. This is something we will continue to develop throughout Year 4. We also encourage children to continue using TT rockstars to develop speed and accuracy of all times tables.
