Spring Term

As part of our English work this half term, we have been writing instructions for how to make bread. We have had to use lots of imperative (bossy) verbs and adverbs to make our instructions clear and easy to follow. We have written an explanation to explain how and why the fire spread so quickly. We have also written descriptive poetry trying to include adjectives, similes and adjectives to describe the fire.  In spelling sessions we have focused on adding suffixes to root words. We have used the rhyme, “Is there a letter we need to drop? Is there a letter to double or swap?” You could help your child with their English skills by reading with them as often as possible and learning to read and spell the tricky words on pages 18 and 19 of your reading diary.

As Mathematicians the children have continued to practise the application of their numeracy skills to solve problems. They have identified the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and used this to solve problems.
The children have been recalling multiplication facts from the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They have also been practising counting in 3s and 4s.

Creative Curriculum

We have found out all about The Great Fire of London and showcased our learning through the Arts. Particularly through the medium of Dance and Drama. As part of our Design and Technology learning the children have had to design purposeful, functional, and appealing products based on their design criteria. They have made fire engines using a range of tools and equipment to develop their skills such as cutting, shaping, joining and finishing. They have critiqued, evaluated and tested their own and others finished products. They have also enjoyed baking bread as part of our learning journey. They thought about the importance of hygiene when cooking and used our math’s skills to measure and weigh ingredients carefully.

During Spring 2 Year 2 have enjoyed a hand on learning experience by Eggucation who came into school to talk to the children about life cycles. They brought some tame adult chickens for the children to meet and feed and also left us with seven very special eggs to take care of.

In maths we have been learning about multiplication and division. The children found out that multiplication was commutative but division was not. They have enjoyed sharing their understanding through drawing pictures and arrays to solve problems.

Our SPAG has focused on recapping the different word classes and our spelling has focused on adding suffixes.


We have created some beautiful pictures of sunflowers inspired by Van Gough’s sunflowers. The children enjoyed researching about the life of this talented artist. We have used our observational skills to draw pictures of different breeds of chicken. We have used perseverance to add details to show the colours and textures of their feathers.

Our Science this half term has been around Life Cycles. They have shown their curiosity through the range of interesting questions they asked Debs during our talk by Eggucation They have carried out an investigation into how plants get water using simple scientific language to talk about what they have found out and communicate their ideas to each other. They have then shared this knowledge with their parents by growing a sunflower which they give to their Mum for Mother’s Day.
